Llancaiach Fawr - A Manor At War

I spent today at Llancaiach Fawr, a manor house built in the 17th century that had transformed in to a French chateau in occupied Normandy in 1944. The house and grounds were kitted out with various different re-enactors from German to American, all of whom were very friendly and knowledgeable. I think I shocked an older man standing near me during a talk on German personal protective weaponry (or grenades) when I knew what RPG meant (rocket propelled grenade), and possibly I took the Sergeant aback when I asked how Germany managed to protect and maintain their supply lines as they pushed through France while completely ignoring the previous conventions of warfare. All in a days work.

Below are some photos I took as I wandered around, I missed most of the events being held but managed to make a briefing on troop placements in Normandy (all in German), a demonstration of grenades, bombs and barricades, caught the tail end of some live singing and spoke to several really great people (including the General who let me photograph him). Llancaiach Fawr is beautiful house with some lovely grounds, and several events a year are held there. The manor is also one of the most haunted houses in South Wales and runs ghost tours at night (I'll not be attending any of those though).

Thanks for stopping by,

Uh... why were they shocked?

Also, that last pic! Bwah!

And I wasn't too interested in the Manor until you mentioned the ghost tour. It's now on my list of places to visit. And yes, I'm doing the ghost tour. I can never resists them! :D

Tors

Well, of everyone there I was in bright red lipstick, matching nail varnish, cute denim dress, make-up and styled hair so I imagine that of everyone there was I was the one that looked the least likely to have any knowledge in actual tactics or weapons.

I love that last propoganda pic, it was up in the UK/US camp on the company notice board, I just had to take a pic!

And you're going by your lonesome to the ghost tour, seriously ;)

Eugenie

Haha, yes, a lady knowing about WMD does seem out of place. ;)

Aw, come on! It'd be fun!! I LOVE ghost tours! Been to one in Port Arthur, Tasmania, which I think is the most haunted place in Australia. It was AWESOME. Went to the one in The Rocks, Sydney, and did one locally in Melb as well. I was rather miffed at my parents for not allowing me to do the Jack the Ripper tour in London when I was 14 when we first visited.

Seems like my sense of morbidity developed young. ;)

Tors

Why does it not surprise me that you'd want to go on the Jack the Ripper tour at age 14. I know of a school trip that went to Llancaiach Fawr one evening for a tour, my friend's daughter was one of the kids that went. She wouldn't sleep in her own bed that night because a ghost of a child had followed them around, holding her hand or climbing in to her lap whenever she sat down. She couldn't see it but she could feel it. So I won't be going, I have enough problems with reality as it is, thanks! :)

Eugenie

It was also the same year (or 3) that I thought about being a funeral director or a medical examiner. :P

Ah well, will have to find someone else to go with me then! Strangely enough, I'm not a big fan of horror movies. *shrug*
