Vintage Make-Up Compact

Last week my Mum and I decided we deserved a treat and took ourselves off the The Pumping Station in Cardiff, one of our favourite places to go rummage. Being on a limited budget my day was planned more as a fact-finding mission as I'm going to need a wood burning stove by winter or freeze to death in my stone house with only one radiator. Mum wasn't looking for anything in particular, but found a gorgeous Victorian chesterfield sofa on delicate casters that was actually shallow enough for us both to sit on, lean back and touch the floor. Unheard of with modern sofas!

Sofa safely reserved until she could drag my step-dad for a viewing, Mum and I headed off to our favourite section; the clothes and jewellery. The stalls in question used to be based near my Mum's house further west, but they recently closed down and relocated to the Pumping Station. Great news for me, as it means I get to rummage through vintage clothing to my heart's content, even if I can rarely afford the prices. While we were creating our normal havoc Mum discovered a beautiful make-up compact that I immediately fell in love with, and so a new present came home with me.

It's marked Fifth Avenue "Cosmetist", so presumably it's an American design. The case is a plain, sleek black, the simplicity appealed to me immediately, I'm not a huge fan of bling. It has four covered compartments, a comb, mirror, powder puff and lipstick holder. I've not seen one like this before, it's roughly the size of a large cigarette case. Everything is in great condition, the case has the usual surface scratches you'd expect in a vintage item, and it clips closed with a simple gold clasp. Now, I just need to figure out what belongs in each pot and I'm refilling this puppy up!

Thanks for stopping by,

I can see why you are in love! It's gorgeous. I love these little 'nods' to the classics that you can still get.

Tors, try shopping along the northern coast! Loads of little bargain basements, I thought of you as I was shopping!

Oooh, did you have a lovely time? I bet it was great. Can't believe there's good shopping to be had, I might have to make a roadtrip up north! x

I've got one of these, but much shabbier than yours. I don't have the comb or the lipstick case unfortunately, they are long gone! Also the clasp is missing on mine. I still love it though, it's so unusual.! I use mine everyday. I found that Max Factor single eyeshadows fit into the wells if you take them out of the plastic cases, which is a bit fiddly, but worth the effort.
